Edmonton and Calgary have been named host cities for the International Indigenous Games, running July 25 to 31, 2027. The Indigenous-led event will bring together athletes, youth, and cultural leaders from around the world to celebrate Indigenous sport, culture, and unity across Alberta.
Lowa Beebe, Chair of the International Indigenous Games & Gathering, tells CFWE she’s excited to see Treaties 6, 7, and 8 Nations working together to host a global Indigenous sporting event in Edmonton and Calgary.
Beebe adds the games will feature a Pow Wow in Calgary showcasing Indigenous cultures from Canada, the United States, and around the world, along with traditional games and the Indian Relay races that will be led by Brant Dodginghorse.
Beebe says she hopes athletes feel welcomed and safe, and that being immersed in culture leaves a lasting impact they can bring back to their home communities.
