Groundbreaking ceremony of the Nipisi Gardens in Samson Cree Nation (Photo Submitted)
Samson Cree Nation Chief and Council gathered to mark the groundbreaking of their new rodeo grounds, known as Nipisi Gardens.
Chief Vern Saddleback spoke about how this project represents one step forward in reviving our three ways of culture: Rodeo, Pow Wow, and Minor Hockey, and how together, we can build a future rooted in who we are as First Nations people.
Katherine Swampy, Senior Manager of Business Development for Samson Cree Nation, tells CFWE the new facility will give community members a dedicated space of their own, eliminating the need to rely on neighboring areas for programs and practices.
Swampy says the new rodeo grounds will be officially named Nipisi Gardens, that will be a place to teach and inspire young cowboys, farmers, and ranchers – reviving the horse culture and way of life that defines Samson Cree Nation.
The Nipisi Gardens Rodeo Grounds are slated to be completed in August 2026.
