The provincial government has served formal notice that they will introduce back to work legislation to end the Alberta teachers’ strike.
Bill 2, known as the Back to School Act, was announced via an order paper published on the Alberta Legislature’s website Thursday. The government has previously said it could introduce legislation to order teachers back to work as early as Monday.
In a statement, the Alberta Teachers’ Association said: “We anticipated that government would introduce back-to-work legislation.”
“We need to see the legislation to fully understand what it means for teachers,” the statement said.
About 750,000 students in public, separate and francophone schools have been out of their classrooms since Oct. 6. NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi said in a statement that his party condemns the move.
“This is an attack on teachers, on public education, on all workers and their unions,” he said.
“We unequivocally condemn it.”
