2 Days ago, the Treaty 6 Recognition Day commemorated the signing of Treaty 6 at Fort Carlton in 1876. Where on August 23, 1876, the Plains Cree, Woods Cree, Nakota Sioux, Saulteaux, and Dene people met with crown representatives at Fort Carlton to enter into Treaty No. 6.
Edmonton, being founded in Treaty No. 6 territory, the traditional name of Edmonton was Amiskwacîwâskahikan, meaning Beaver Hills in Cree. The City of Edmonton and the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations co-hosted the first Treaty No. 6 recognition day in 2013. Which was organized then and now, to remember and honor the signage. The recognition day was created to appreciate the relationship of the City of Edmonton and the First Nations people of the land.
