Police have charged a man with arson following a house fire south of Fort McMurray last weekend after witnesses allege he was firing fireworks inside the home.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say officers were on a routine patrol on the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation on August 10 when they were flagged down by residents at around 11 p.m.. The officers were told of a house fire, and firefighters were called.
After Regional Emergency Services extinguished the fire, investigators found fire damage limited to the kitchen and living room. No one was home at the time. Witnesses told police they saw the man setting off fireworks inside the home. Police found the man nearby and arrested him.
51 year old Kevin Janvier of the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation is charged with arson. He has been released from custody and is scheduled to make a court appearance in Fort McMurray on August 20.
