The Fort McKay Community Centre has opened after two years of construction after a ribbon-cutting ceremony was hosted in the community on Tuesday afternoon. The $16.1-million, 12,000 square-foot centre will be operated by the Fort McKay Métis Nation and open to the entire community. There are spaces for events and community gatherings, as well as a commercial kitchen, concessions, and a main stage with backstage space and storage.
“This building is more than just walls and a roof; it’s a place where our people will gather to celebrate Métis Days, host weddings, share meals, honour loved ones, and pass down culture to future generations,” said Loretta Waquan, president of the Fort McKay Métis Nation and an RMWB councillor, in a statement.
This is the latest major project to open in the Fort McKay area. In June 2022, the community celebrated the opening of a new fire hall for the Fort McKay Fire Department.
In September 2022, Elsie Fabian School opened on the Fort McKay First Nation. The Indigenous-run school replaced Fort McKay School, which was run by the Northland School Division. The K-9 school teaches a modified version of the Alberta curriculum that reflects Fort McKay’s Cree, Dene and Métis heritage.
