A measles outbreak has been reported in John D’Or Prairie, a small First Nations community in northern Alberta, part of the Little Red River Cree Nation. Three people from the same household have tested positive, with two hospitalized but now recovering at home in isolation. The outbreak, first identified on Sunday, is believed to have started outside the community, which has about 700 residents.
Indigenous Services Canada is working with provincial partners to monitor and respond to the situation, including contact tracing, testing, and isolating potential cases.
A vaccination drive and an emergency vaccine clinic are being set up in John D’Or Prairie. ISC advises anyone with measles to stay home for at least four days after the rash appears to prevent further spread.
