Grande Prairie’s transition towards having its own municipal police continues, with five Grande Prairie Police Service members joining the RCMP detachment.
Four will serve as general duty police officers and one as a forensic investigator. The Alberta RCMP remains the police of jurisdiction during the transition.
The municipal police force takes over primary jurisdiction on April 1, 2026.
In addition to the training and assessments completed during the recruitment process, GPPS officers receive additional training to become familiar with RCMP policies and procedures to provide citizens with a consistent approach to policing.
Grande Prairie Mayor Jackie Clayton says the council’s decision to cancel the RCMP deal was difficult but necessary.
“There’s an emotional attachment to the RCMP. It’s a symbolic piece of Canada, it’s history and so, change is hard,” said Clayton. “However, the city is ready for a service more tailored to local needs.
Grande Prairie residents are reminded to continue calling 911 for any emergency’s.
For non emergency calls or if you need to report a crime, call the RCMP detachment directly at 780-830-5700
