The Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers faced off for the first time since their seven-game series in the Stanley Cup Final. After only scoring one goal in their previous 211 minutes of play and being shut out in back-to-back road games, the Panthers exploded offensively to come back from a 4-3 deficit through 40 minutes to capture a wild 6-5 victory over the Oilers on Monday night.
Edmonton found scoring from Kasperi Kapanen, Connor Brown, Leon Draisaitl, and Zach Hyman, who scored two including a beautiful breakaway goal. Captain Connor McDavid led the way with three assists.
Midway through the first period, searching for a spark, Head Coach Kris Knoblauch put Hyman, McDavid, and Draisaitl on a line with immediate success. Following the game Knoblauch spoke to media on his decision.
Many players across the Oilers locker room echoed similar thoughts postgame, not being able to close out a game like that is disappointing and captain Connor McDavid said this has been a trend going back to the Vegas game.
The Oilers (18-11-2) had their five-game winning streak snapped last night but will look to maintain winning momentum before Christmas with three more home games against Boston, San Jose, and Ottawa.
