The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has cleared several officers who shot and killed a man in 2021.
Crews killed 29 year old Lionel Ernest Grey of High Prairie on June 18th 2021, after a two day search that saw the death of a police dog. A day earlier an officer attempted to arrest Grey who was wanted on numerous warrants during a High Prairie traffic stop.
In the ASIRT report, Grey refused to stop and drove off in a red Cadillac, later in the pursuit RCMP found the suspect vehicle off a service road. The officers later used a police dog named Jago to track the suspect.
After locating the suspect, RCMP officers heard machine gun shots and Jago wimper, crews then started firing at Grey but he escaped on foot, after a significant chase, Grey had been taken down by officers.
ASIRT determined that because Grey had fired at the officers and shot and killed a canine officer on June 17 and refused to surrender and picked up a gun on June 18, the officers were justified in using force to protect themselves.
