The Slave Lake Native Friendship Centre is calling on community members to join in on their food drive that is a set for September 28 as their food bank is in urgent need of donations. With rising demand, the shelves are running low, and they’re asking for non-perishable food items and monetary support to help families in need.
Barb Courtorille, executive director for the Slave Lake Native Friendship Centre says many flyers have gone out to community, with big donation bins set to be released to locations such as Tim Hortons, Walmart, Sobeys, and No Frills.
Courtorille says their membership has climbed drastically from 2,000 clients to five thousand with over 2,500 being children in need of food.
Courtorille adds that they aren’t able to meet the high demand with serving 50 families in one week, with having to resort to their bank account to spend 15,000 dollars to provide food and diapers for families.
Courtorille says that the overall response from the community leading up to the food drive is showing they have stepped up with donations coming in ahead of September 28.
