From September 22 – October 6, entrance 8 at Kingsway Mall in Edmonton will showcase a series of portraits of Residential School Survivors who are contributing to their family & community, showing that Residential Schools are not a part of ancient history, that survivors are still around.
The Survivor Portraits gallery coincides with National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30. This important day commemorates the tragic history of residential schools in Canada and honours the resilience and strength of survivors. By featuring the personal stories of survivors, this exhibit offers a tangible way to connect with the past and learn from it.
Damian Abrahams is the owner/operator of Indigital Media, and spoke with CFWE about the gallery.
Abraham says being a second generation Residential School Survivor, the exhibit and his grandmothers stories share parallels with the Survivors featured within the exhibit.
Abraham adds that he is grateful for Kingsway Mall for hosting the Survivor Portraits exhibit with being met with support from the staff in a welcoming environment.
Abraham is hopeful that shoppers in Kingsway Mall will see that survivors from Residential Schools are still here, with their stories included on the floor display within the banners of the exhibit within the mall.
