The Government of Alberta has future plans to do away with photo radar on numbered highways, provincial highways as well as intersections.
This, according to a memo that was sent to Edmonton City councilors. This would include photo radar placement on the Anthony Henday, Stony Plain Road, Yellowhead Trail, Whitemud Drive, Calgary Trail and Gateway Boulevard.
Photo radar would be limited to schools, playground and construction zones.
In December of 2023, the province updated its regulations and banned “fishing hole” photo radar locations which included targeting drivers on the Anthony Henday Freeway as they were deemed as a cash grab.
The decision has sparked debate among city councilors with some citing it as an effective tool to encourage drivers to slow down. The general public is in support of the decision and has always considered photo radar to be a cash grab.
In 2023, more than 50 percent of motor vehicle collisions were the result of speeding according to reports. An alarming 88 percent of those accidents took place in areas in where photo radar would be prohibited.
The Alberta government will release the finalized list of all allowed photo radar locations by the end of the year.
