With all the Overtime that the Edmonton Oilers seen during their quest for the holy grail of hockey last season, the overtime accumulated by the Edmonton Police Service related to the events was far greater.
The Edmonton Police Service totaled close to $1.9 million in overtime and policing which required extra duties related to the 2024 playoff run, according to a CBC freedom of information request.
Of the almost $2 million, the City of Edmonton will cover $446,505, and the Oilers Entertainment Group paying $325,891 leaving the remaining $1,088,616 coming out of the pockets of Edmonton taxpayers.
During the playoff run which began April 22 against the Los Angeles Kings and ran though June 24 with the road loss in game 7 to the Florida Panthers, Edmonton seen a huge influx of fans at various locations downtown and Whyte Avenue. From Rogers Place to watch parties, the city seen throngs of people in bars as well as open areas.
According to a statement, the city has invoiced the OEG to cover it’s share of the added policing costs.
