Due to increasingly warm weather, the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road is closing for the season on Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Road conditions have deteriorated significantly because of the warmer weather. All rig mats will be removed by April 5, which will make the road impassable.
It is extremely dangerous to use the winter road when it’s closed
Travelling on the winter road when it is closed is strictly prohibited and extremely dangerous. Barricades and signage will be in place and there is no detour. Any motorist using the winter road while it’s closed is putting themself and others at risk of a serious incident.
Drive to conditions and slow down on the winter road
Drivers must follow all traffic rules and understand that there are additional hazards and risks present while using the winter road. Please remember to plan ahead, drive to conditions and follow all posted signage.
Vehicles over 5,000 kg on the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road have been restricted to nighttime travel for the remainder of the season. Drivers of larger loads likely require a permit and should review the Heavy Vehicle Information Package before using a winter road.
Vehicles heavier than the posted load limit using the winter road will be subject to serious fines and penalties. Before traveling on the road, please review the Winter Road Safety Tips.
