The Metis Nation Within Alberta and the Government of Alberta announced it’s partnership to build a world class addiction center that will be known as the ‘Healing Waters Recovery Community Centre.
Healing Waters Recovery Community and will have 75 long-term treatment beds, capable of supporting up to 300 people every year in their pursuit of recovery. In total, Alberta’s government is building 11 recovery communities, five of which are in partnership with Indigenous communities.
The total investment into Indigenous recovery communities is about $180 million. The Healing Waters Recovery Community in partnership with the Métis Nation will be built about 100 km northwest of Edmonton, near Métis Crossing.
Kaila Mitchell, secretary of Mental Health and Addictions, Otipemisiwak Métis Government says it’s an exciting time for the Healing Waters Project and the Government of Alberta working together to build a culturally appropriate addiction recovery facility for Metis citizens that are struggling with addiction.
Dan Williams, Alberta Minister of Mental Health and Addiction says that many Indigenous people are affected by addiction, and adds that their is alarming rates of many that are in need of supports to pull them out of addictions and to be on the path towards recovery.
Minister Williams goes on to speak on the Healing Water Facility as it will provide services for 300 people that will have clients participate in a program that includes individual and group therapy, skills development and relationship building. This ensures those leaving treatment can succeed in recovery with employment, housing and reconnection with family and friends that will be open in 2026.
