The Edmonton Oilers hired former Chicago Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman as general manager and vice president of hockey operations on July 24. Bowman who spent 20 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks becomes the 11th General Manager in Oilers franchise history.
Bowman spent 20 seasons in Chicago with the Blackhawks organization. He started as a special assistant to the general manager in 2001. He was promoted to Director of Hockey Operations for the 2005-06 season, in 2007 he was named assistant general manager before being appointed as the Blackhawks ninth general manager in franchise history on July 14, 2009.
Bowman replaces Ken Holland as general manager, Holland managed the team for five seasons. The Oilers and Holland agreed to mutually part ways once his contract expired after the 2023-24 season.

Stan Bowman, Joel Quenneville and Al MacIssac received bans from the NHL two years ago regarding their roles in the Chicago Blackhawks alleged sexual assault scandal. Bowman resigned in 2021 after being ineligible to work with a NHL team. An independent investigation in 2021 determined the three did not respond adequately to allegations that the team’s former video coach sexually assaulted forward Kyle Beach during the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2010 which resulted in the ban.
The NHL announced on July 1 they were lifting their ban and the three are eligible to seek employment in the NHL. Stan Bowman along with Joel Quenneville and Al MacIssac became eligible to sign contracts with NHL teams on July 10,
Bowman will speak to the media in the Oilers hall of fame at Rogers Place in Edmonton at 10:30 a.m. MT.
