The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team is currently investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred on June 29 in the northeast neighbourhood of Fraser. ASIRT has stated that the incident started with a single-vehicle rollover on Anthony Henday Drive near 153rd Avenue shortly before 9 p.m. on June 29th.
After a witness called 911 to report that the driver of a rolled-over vehicle had left the scene on foot, the police started searching the surrounding neighbourhoods in the community of Fraser. At 9:11 p.m., the Edmonton Police Service Air 1 was called in to help locate the driver.
At 9:21 p.m., a man matching the description given to EPS was located. The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team stated that the officer at the scene stopped, stepped out of his vehicle, and confronted the man.
The male stopped walking and raised his arms to his sides while facing the officer who had his gun drawn. The subject officer and male engaged verbally with each other.
After a verbal altercation, the officer at the scene fired his weapon at the man, who then dropped to the ground. The man was rushed to the hospital by paramedics and received medical attention, but died as a result of the gunshot wounds, as confirmed by ASIRT.
No other individuals or police officers were injured as a result of the altercation.
