It’s official.
Ken Holland is no longer with the Edmonton Oilers as president of hockey operations and general manager.
His contract will end this Sunday. Holland joined the Oilers organization back in may of 2019.
Oilers Hockey Operations CEO Jeff Jackson made a statement Thursday morning saying “The Edmonton Oilers and Ken Holland have mutually agreed that his contract will not be extended beyond the end of its current term,” adding that Hollands time here was immeasurable. “Over the past five seasons as General Manager, Ken has not only built the Edmonton Oilers into one of the NHL’s best teams, but he has also established a deeply rooted foundation of success and a culture of winning that will continue well into the future. Thanks in large part to Ken’s outstanding work, Edmonton has become a destination city for players around the National Hockey League. We wish Ken, Cindi and his entire family the very best and thank him for his leadership and contributions to the Oilers organization and the City of Edmonton.”
Hollands accolades include 4 Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings along with some big name moves within the Oilers roster.
He signed Zach Hyman and Evander Kane and traded for Mattias Ekholm. On the draft front, Holland helped draft the young Dylan Holloway and Phillip Broberg.
Over the years he did, however face some sharp criticism with the signing of netminder Jack Campbell, who carried a hefty price tag of $25 million and proved to be a flop in the Oilers blue paint. Holland also inked defenseman Darnell Nurse to a $9.25 million per season contract which has been considered as over-priced in the eyes of many fans.
No word on if a new GM will be hired by Oilers brass soon. Oilers Hockey Operations CEO Jeff Jackson is schedule to speak with the media today at 11:30 a.m.
The NHL draft is this Friday and free agency opens up next Monday
