Gas stations across the province are getting an early start on raising the price at the pumps ahead of the Easter long weekend & summer season.
As of Wednesday, March 29, increases have been noted in most areas of the province, however the Cheapest gas can be found at Costco in Nisku where the price sits at 115.9 cents.
According to Gas Buddy, today’s price is nowhere near the record highs seen last year where consumers were paying around $1.66 per litre which continued to rise to $1.89 in June 2022.
Alberta has suspended the collection of the provincial fuel tax on gasoline and diesel, and will remain in place until at least June 30, 2023.
The Federal Governments Carbon Pricing is set to increase from $50 per tonne to $65 per tonne on April 1, 2023, which will increase the current 11.05 cents per litre carbon price to 14.31 cents per litre of gas.
The increased cost will hit motorists in Alberta, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba — provinces without their own carbon pricing schemes in place.
More clean fuel regulations are set to take effect on July 1, 2023 which is expected to increase the price of gas. Those regulations will require gasoline and diesel producers and importers to reduce the carbon intensity of their fuel.
