The City of Grande Prairie is seeking Requests for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) from artists for the creation of a local monument celebrating the 125 anniversary of the Treaty 8 signing, with the anniversary taking place on June 21.
Warren Nekuark, Indigenous Relations with the City of Grande Prairie spoke with CFWE, speaks on the five things that the City of Grande Prairie is looking for when choosing an artist for creating the Treaty 8 monument.
Nekurak speaks on the few ideas as to where the monument will potentially be erected within Grande Prairie, without revealing the talked about locations as Grande Prairie officials want to keep it a surprise.
Nekurak says that he and his team reached out to the Treaty 8 communities for guidance on how to go bring the Monument to life, with Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation and many other Nations aiding in the efforts to put together the monument.
Nekurak adds that once the monument is completed and revealed, he’s hopeful that the community will be educated by the monument on the Treaty 8 culture, the resilience of their people and the signing of the Treaty.
