Firefighters were busy over the weekend with wildfires and brush fires in Northern Alberta.
On Saturday evening, Grande Prairie RCMP responded to a large brush fire around 7:45 p.m.
The fire threatened three homes and a forested area between Range Roads 52-54 and Township Roads 730-732, near Clairmont on April 20. Crews from the county, Alberta wildfire and the City of Grande Prairie worked on the fire, which was estimated to be 60 hectares in size.
On Sunday afternoon, an evacuation alert was issued for Saprae Creek Estates, south of Fort McMurray.
Issued at 3:50 p.m., a Alberta Emergency Alert heard on CFWE, warned residents that a nearby wildfire could spread toward the community, and that anyone in the area should be ready to leave on short notice.
At 4:30 p.m., the Alberta Wildfire dashboard showed a 30-hectare fire burning out of control southeast of the community, just west of Christina River.
Shortly after, another wildfire was spotted 23 km Northwest of Slave Lake.
A section of Highway 2 was closed due to a rapidly progressing forest fire in the nearby community of Canyon Creek.
Around 4:20 p.m., RCMP said the highway was closed between Seppola Drive (Range Road 80) and Centre Avenue.
In an update at 9:30pm, The wildfire was being held, and is not anticipated to grow past expected boundaries given the current weather and firefighting resources. The wildfire is 3.0 hectares in size and the cause is under investigation
As of Sunday afternoon, there were 66 wildfires burning in Alberta, with two considered out of control
