The Urban village in Edmonton’s Ice District is now expecting three additional years to complete according to the Katz Group and the blame is being placed on the pandemic, along with the current state of real estate.
The 2,500 residential units, along with the public park to go along with them have been pushed back by at least three years.
Phase 2 of the OEG plans were initially scheduled to begin this year to develop the land that surrounds Roger’s Place.
Recovery in the real estate market hasn’t been easy and has added hurdles according to OEG executive vice-president Tim Shipton, who spoke to City Council on April 2, at a public hearing.
Two parking lots in the area, on surface level were approved by Council at the meeting, for up to five years.
The land was never intended to be long term parking.
Ward Sspomitapi Coun. Jo-Anne Wright voiced concern over the approval of the parking lot extension.
“I’m concerned as well that this is going to sit vacant, a gravel lot for another five years with nothing being done,” Wright said. “I don’t see this as being good use of land, to have these surface parking lots.”
