The Edmonton man accused of committing a terror act in city hall has been denied bail by an Edmonton judge.
A bail hearing which lasted hours looked to grant pretrial release to Bezhani Sarvar, the man who opened fire and threw a molotov cocktail within Edmonton’s city hall.
Justice Janet Dixon denied Sarvar bail on Thursday evening.
According to the Criminal Code , there are three stipulations on which an accused person can be denied bail. If the judge considers it necessary to ensure the accused attends court, to protect the public if it is believed the accused is at risk of committing another offence or to maintain confidence in the administration of justice.
On Jan 23, Sarvar threw multiple Molotov cocktails inside city hall inside the atrium and then fired several rounds from an SKS rifle.
Although no one was injured during the attack, the occurrence caused approximately $100,000 in damage breaking glass bannisters, one exterior window, bullet holes in the walls and flooring that was burned in the atrium.
Sarvar attended Thursday’s bail hearing with his defence lawyer Jamil Sawani.
In addition to the list of local police charges, the RCMP’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) charged Sarvar with 11 terror-related offences, after a video on YouTube titled “Rise up” showed him telling viewers he was about to complete a “mission” and addressed societal issues such as taxes, inffation, housing costs, immigration and”the wokeism disease.”
