The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) is on the lookout for local Indigenous athletes, community builders and local legends to be represented in a travelling Indigenous Sports Gallery.
The gallery’s main goal is to inspire youth and share incredible stories of Indigenous athletes and their contribution to the RMBW. In 2023, the Arctic Winter games created a travelling Indigenous Sports Gallery to honour Call to Action 87.
Building on the success from the first gallery, the Municipality will continue this tradition and will host the inaugural RMWB Gallery this summer.
Allison Flett, a member of the Miksew First Nastion, is the Indigenous and Rural Affairs Advisor for the community and spoke with The Windspeaker Radio Network about making sure all Indigenous Youth have a chance to be recognised.
To qualify, nominees must be a member of a local First Nation or Métis community and have lived within the RMWB for at least 12 consecutive months as of April 1, 2023. Additionally, youth athletes must check these boxes:
- Between 8-18 years old
- Devoted to sport and making a positive impact in the community
- Demonstrates active participation and skill in their sport
- Participates in sport within their community, in regional, provincial or national competitions, on competitive post-secondary teams or elite stream competition.
- Willing to contribute a quote about how sport has supported their well being
Flett says the nominees don’t need to come from major sports, rather can also be focused on the traditional games such has handgames or pow wow dancing to represent the rich and vibrant cultures within the RMWB.
