Following the devastating 2023 wildfire season in which the province spent more than $750 million dollars towards, Alberta Wildfire has started their season for 2024 ten days earlier than other years.
Wildfire season in Alberta usually runs from March 1st to October 31st, but the dry conditions and lack of snow was enough reason for the province to start their season early to take precaution.
In 2023, the province saw 22,000 square kilometers burn with 48 communities being evacuated. Chris Pottie is the FireSmart Analyst with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo and gave some advice for residents to help prevent the spread of wildfire.
FireSmart will continue to perform home assessments to make sure everyone is prepared for whatever may come during the 2024 season. Pottie adds the early start doesn’t mean the season will be worse than others, rather a precaution.
