The transportation Safety Board of Canada said the crash happened on the frozen surface of Lake Athabasca just after 3 p.m. Monday.
The pilot was the only one on board at the time.
Alberta RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mathew Howell says the helicopter was being used for industrial purposes when it crashed. He could not offer details about the pilot, the company, its destination or the work it was doing at the time
The TSB is sending two investigators to the site and they are scheduled to arrive on Wednesday.
