The City of Red Deer is launching its inaugural Trick or Eat initiative, encouraging residents to donate non-perishable food items to the Red Deer Food Bank.
Residents can support the cause by bringing food donations to participating neighbourhood blocks on Halloween night. The goal is to collect 10,000 pounds of food.
“This time of year, we’re running pretty thin,” says Red Deer Food Bank executive director Mitch Thomson.
He adds that helping neighbours in need can strengthen the community and ensure everyone has access to a solid, inclusive community.
Launched in 2012, Trick or Eat is a youth-led national initiative that puts a new spin on traditional Halloween activities. Instead of collecting candy, thousands of participants across the country raise money online and go door to door collecting non-perishable food items for local food agencies. The initiative also raises awareness about hunger in Canada through household flyers, educational materials, and online resources.
