Alberta will soon have a brand-new area code after the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission gave the green light to expand the province’s capacity.
Facing a projected shortfall of available phone numbers by 2029, the CRTC instructed the Canadian Numbering Administrator—which operates under its authority—to lead a special committee tasked with finding a solution.
That process produced a recommendation the commission formally endorsed in a decision released Tuesday.
Area code 568 will begin serving Alberta on June 10, 2028.
Once in place, 568 will join the five existing codes already covering the province—368, 403, 587, 780 and 825—ensuring residents and businesses continue to have access to fresh telephone numbers for years to come.
