Lac La Biche County and Portage College are partnering up to host a series of events on Wednesday, September 30, to commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
The day will begin with a sunrise ceremony at 7 a.m. in the wanîskah room at the Lac La Biche Portage College campus. This ceremony holds significant importance in Indigenous culture.
Following the ceremony, there will be a community walk from Portage College to the Bold Centre. The walk will proceed along 93rd Street and 94th Avenue before turning onto Beaver Hill Road. It will then continue along 91st Avenue, concluding at the Bold Centre.
“The Bold Centre event will begin around 11 a.m. with a dignitary address, guest speaker and community lunch. Everyone is welcome to attend,” said Chenee Miller, special events coordinator, strategy and community growth for Lac La Biche County.
“Hosting Truth and Reconciliation events in Lac La Biche County each year ensures that the truth of what happened is acknowledged, the memories of all those affected are preserved, healing is supported, and relationships among community members are strengthened – all while showing that reconciliation is an active, ongoing commitment within Lac La Biche County.”
