The Westlock Aquatic Centre has closed for its annual maintenance shutdown, during which facility repairs, deep cleaning, and essential upgrades will take place. The centre is scheduled to reopen on October 12.
“This helps us keep the aquatic centre safe, clean, and operating efficiently for everyone,” said Sharelene Edwards, director of community services. “Part of the reason for closing the entire facility is that some projects occurring over the next five weeks make it unsafe for members of the public to move through the building.”
Key work during this closure includes replacing slippery sections of the epoxy pool deck and replacing a Camus boiler as part of Phase 1 of a two-year capital project; the second boiler is set for replacement next year.
Staff will also upgrade the women’s change room by replacing the old wooden structure with a new hospital-grade stainless steel curtain system and benches. Other general maintenance tasks include painting the front entrance area, replacing concrete near the entrance, updating furniture and deck equipment, and conducting safety inspections on fitness equipment. In addition to structural upgrades, the pool aims to enhance accessibility.
The aquatic centre is also awaiting a report from an ongoing aquatic enhancement study, which will inform potential future projects for 2027 and beyond.
