Canadians will continue to see a break at the pumps after the federal government announced an extension of the temporary fuel excise tax suspension.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne made the announcement in Ottawa on Wednesday, saying the suspension will continue through the end of January 2027.
From Feb. 1 to March 31, the tax will return at 50 per cent, before being fully reinstated on April 1.
The tax was originally suspended on April 20 and had been scheduled to return after Labour Day. The federal government estimates the suspension is saving drivers about 10 cents per litre on regular gasoline and four cents per litre on diesel and aviation fuel.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is pushing for the federal government to go further, calling for all federal taxes on gas and diesel to be removed until at least July 1, 2027.
