Three swimmers from St. Albert are heading to Medicine Hat to participate in the 2026 Special Olympics Summer Games, which will take place from August 11 to 15.
Connor Bissett, Michelle Tschetter, and Christian Ziegler are eager to secure medals for Team Alberta.
Tschetter, who will be competing in her third Special Olympics, describes herself as a veteran. “It’s awesome. The coaches are fantastic, and the teammates are great. I can’t wait to compete with them,” she said during a final training session last week.
Bissett, who is expected to compete in the World Games next year, trains up to six times a week with various swim clubs. His dedication has earned him the title of “fitness captain” for Team Alberta.
Ziegler, making his debut at the Special Olympics this week, expresses excitement about learning from and interacting with his teammates. His game plan is to “swim fast like Spider-Man.”
Coach Heather Wilson praised the team, stating, “They have all worked exceptionally hard over the past year, improving their strokes, starts, and turns, while working together in relays. They always give 110% effort and never hesitate to do what is needed.”
Special Olympics Canada is dedicated to providing athletes with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to compete at their best, organizing the World Games every four years, similar to the Olympics and Paralympics
