Willow Lake Metis Nation is marking an historic milestone with the return of 20 bison to their traditional lands. Leaders say the long-awaited reintroduction, guided by community voices, is a major step toward restoring traditional food systems, strengthening cultural ties, and advancing food sovereignty.
Matthew Michetti, Senior Manager of Government and Industry Relations with Willow Lake Metis Nation, tells CFWE bringing the 20 bison home historically significant Metis land is a powerful and symbolic milestone for the community.
Michetti adds it’s been 100 years since bison roamed their lands, calling this return the first step in building a sustainable food program for the nation.
Michetti, who has worked closely with the project, says the bison’s return carries a spiritual strength that provides grounding and a renewed foundation for the community.
