Distraction scams involve thieves creating a ruse—like asking for directions, staging a fight, or offering fake jewelry—to divert a victim’s attention and steal valuables, often targeting seniors in public, parking lots, or at home. Accomplices often work in teams to snatch purses, wallets, or jewelry within seconds, sometimes using physical contact like hugs to swap items.
