Fort McMurray public transit is making some changes.
There are new routes, others scrapped entirely or have been merged. There is also an on-demand service, that will work similarily to rideshare programs that have been created. The downtown terminal will be closing, and will become another part of the street.
These changes are coming August 22nd, and are a response to common themes that have been mentioned during public feedback; like long transfer times, too many transfers, lengthy trips and long wait times.
RMWB Transit already offer routes to Fort McMurray high schools, but there will be new route numbers. A transit guide will be sent to all schools, pick-up and drop-off times will be similar.
Route 1 (Thickwood-Gregoire) and Route 2 (Timberlea-Keyano)
Route 1 and Route 2 will run on Fort McMurray’s main roads, and connect to areas that see high rider volume and key destinations. This new system will now merge four routes.
The new core route will run from 5 a.m. to midnight on weekdays, and 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Buses will run every 15 minutes, and during weekend the holidays the routes will run every 25 minutes.
Transit on Demand
A new service will now allow riders to book a ride when their neighbourhood route is not available. Transit on Demand is similar to Uber or Lyft, but instead, the bus will travel between bus stops instead of your home. Once your ride is booked, you will be picked up within 30 minutes.
Transit on Demand will run evenings only from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday to Friday, and 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.
Main Street Terminal will be closing
The downtown terminal next to the Provincial Building and the Jubilee Centre will no longer be needed, as there will be two new bus stops on Franklin Avenue near the BMO Centre and Kiyam Community Park.
