The McMurray Métis have officially voted to transition into the Otipemisiwak Métis Government (OMG) as District 17, with an overwhelming 88 percent in favor. The historic announcement marks a major step toward Métis self-governance in Alberta, aligning the region with a province-wide shift toward greater autonomy and recognition under the OMG.
Kelly Myers, Interim District Captain for McMurray Métis District 17 under the OMG, spoke with CFWE about the process leading up to the vote, highlighting a new set of bylaws designed to support citizens within the District.
Myer speaks on the gathering of the McMurray Métis citizens with the largest voter turnout in the region, followed by an 88 percent vote of yes for transitioning to the Otipemisiwak Métis Government. This vote represents the culmination of extensive work, consultation, and preparation. With the approval of new Bylaws, the former Local Council now officially serves as the interim District Council, helping to guide McMurray Métis through the next phase of the transition.
Myers states that she will be meeting with Andrea Sandmaier, Madame President of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, to discuss the current status of the district and the ongoing construction of the McMurray Métis Cultural Centre, which is scheduled for completion in 2027.
Myers expressed excitement about the upcoming transition and emphasized the power of citizen votes in driving change. Once the new bylaws are registered, the OMG Chief Electoral Officer will call District-Level Elections for Fort McMurray District 17, to be held by October 26, 2025. Eligible citizens will receive details on how to vote or run for council. The OMG will share updates through official channels, including its bi-weekly newsletter, The Voyager Voice, and social media.
