With warmer weather melting snow and ice across the region, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is urging residents to stay informed and stay safe as river breakup season begins.
The annual thaw of the Athabasca and Clearwater rivers increases the risk of flooding, particularly in lower-lying areas. While the municipality has installed both permanent and interim flood mitigation measures, officials stress that individual preparedness is equally important.
“River breakup can happen quickly and without warning, Large sections of ice may begin to move suddenly, and water levels can rise with little notice. It is critical to stay off the ice and away from riverbanks during this time.”
While permanent flood mitigation projects have reduced the need for seasonal defenses, temporary measures such as clay berms, water-filled barriers, pumps and underground plugs remain in place. Road and trail closures in some areas will continue until the risk of flooding passes.
Free sandbagging materials are available for residents and business owners at the RMWB Satellite Yard on Silin Forest Road. To access the gated yard, residents should call Pulse to schedule a time. Access is available daily until breakup is complete.
The Municipality is also encouraging all households to review emergency plans, prepare a 72-hour emergency kit, and understand the difference between an Evacuation Alert and an Evacuation Order. An Alert means you should be ready to evacuate on short notice; an Order means you must leave immediately.
In addition, the Vulnerable Persons Registry (VPR) remains open for eligible residents who may require extra assistance during emergencies. The VPR helps first responders by providing critical information and can support safe evacuation when needed. Registration must be completed in advance of any emergency through rmwb.ca/vpr.
As the region faces both river breakup and wildfire season, the RMWB’s message is clear: stay alert, stay informed, and take proactive steps to ensure safety.
