Premier Scott Moe
It’s no joke…
As of April 1, Saskatchewan has become the first province in the country to become carbon tax free.
A pause on the industrial carbon tax rate will be introduced by the provincial government under its Output-Based Performance Standards (OBPS) Program, which is touted to provide immediate financial relief to farms, families, businesses and industry. In addition, the carbon tax rider will no longer be present on SaskPower bills.
“Today, we are making Saskatchewan the first carbon tax free province in Canada,” Premier Scott Moe said in a release announcing the removal of the tax. “In taking the lead on the removal of this harmful tax, we hope all federal leaders will support our position and allow the provinces to regulate in this area without imposing the federal backstop.”
The move was made in the face of ongoing tariff threats and a rising cost of living, with the provincial government stating that it is taking decisive steps to protect Saskatchewan businesses and residents from economic uncertainty and unnecessary taxation.
The provincial government acknowledged the sustainable nature of Saskatchewan’s products in the announcement and said that eliminating industrial carbon costs which are often passed directly on to consumers is a move to protect affordability and economic competitiveness.
