The winter road to Fort Chipewyan will close for the season at 4 p.m. on Monday, March 31, cutting off road access to the northern hamlet until December.
The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo warns that warm temperatures have degraded the surface, making travel slow and difficult for those attempting a last-minute trip. After 4 p.m., barricades and signage will go up, and access will be strictly prohibited.
“Using the road once it is closed is extremely dangerous, there will be no detours, and motorists attempting to bypass barricades will put themselves at serious risk”
