The Ahkameyimok Oskayak Youth Conference
The Ahkameyimok Oskayak Youth Conference is set to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders, bringing together Indigenous youth for a transformative experience. Hosted by the Mamowe Opikihawasowin Tribal Chief Children Family Services West Society, the event will take place at the Bold Centre, offering a platform for young voices to connect, learn, and grow in a supportive and dynamic environment.
Georgette Dion, prevention coordinator for the Mamowe Opikihawasowin Tribal Chief Children Family Services West Society spoke with CFWE on her excitement about hosting their first annual event that will tackle many topics including mental health, drug addictions, positive self-esteem, and cultural awareness.
Many youth within the communities of Whitefish Lake, Beaver Lake, and Heart Lake face many challenges on their own, with the youth conference focusing on reminding the youth to persevere and to never give up.
Dion highlights that the featured guest speakers Harlon Kingfisher, founder of ‘Smudge the Blades’ and UFC Hall of Famer George St-Pierre will share messages on their perseverance and how they became the person they are today.
Dion is hopeful that one of the workshops will connect with the youth as a reminder to persevere and never give up.
