The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is hoping to host the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games in 2027.
Recently, Council approved setting aside $500,000 to host the games if the region’s bid is successful.
According to the RMWB, hosting the games would be an economic boom for the community, attracting 1,200 competitors, plus spouses and spectators from eight Regional Zones across Alberta.
The provincial games feature over a dozen different sporting categories including track and field, swimming, cycling, golf, slo-pitch, horseshoes, pickleball, bocce ball, cribbage and more.
There are many events planned in Fort McMurray this year, including the 2025 Baseball Canada 18U Championship in August
The 2023 Arctic Winter Games was the largest sporting event hosted by Fort McMurray. Since the 2003 games, Wood Buffalo has also hosted the 2004 Arctic Winter Games, 2015 Western Canada Summer Games and 2018 Alberta Winter Games.
Leduc will host the 2025 Alberta 55 plus summer games, which starts on August 21st
