Sylvan Lake RCMP is warning residents and visitors about dangerous ice conditions on Sylvan Lake after two vehicles broke through the ice earlier today.
No injuries have been reported from the two vehicles breaking through the ice in Sylvan Lake on Dec. 28.
However, the incidents that occurred do highlight the need to use caution.
Ice thickness can significantly vary across the lake, and ice conditions currently make it unsafe for vehicles and other heavy equipment to operate.
“We urge everyone to stay off the ice with motorized vehicles and to exercise extreme caution. Please prioritize safety,” Sylvan Lake RCMP said.
In Edmonton, the city’s fire department asks people to stay a “safe distance” away from the North Saskatchewan River and storm water ponds
Residents are being warned that while ice on the river and on ponds might look thick, flowing water underneath it and fluctuating temperatures “create weak areas.”
Firefighters also asked people keep pets leashed on trails and points close to the river.
If you see someone or a pet fall through the ice, call 911.
