A new report released from Edmonton City Council has showed come concerning numbers related to Inmates who are released from across the province who make their way to Edmonton.
This, because Edmonton has a large number of correctional facilities according to the report.
The capital has one of the highest rates of correctional institutions per capita in Canada, according to the report. This includes Edmonton Institution, the Remand Centre, and multiple medium- or minimum-security institutions such as the Stan Daniels Correctional Facility.
To add to the eight federal and provincial detention centres in the Edmonton area, inmates from Bowden Institute, approximately one hour north of Calgary, are driven two hours to be released in Alberta’s capital.
Edmonton’s police chief Dale Mcfee has stated that the result is inmates remaining in the City following their release :
The report indicates that the number of inmates being released in Edmonton in three times greater than Calgary. Edmonton’s inmate capacity is 3,405, with Calgharys number sitting disproportionately at 1,111 which is 306 per cent greater to put in perspective.
Ward papastew councillor Michael Janz says this isn’t fair for Edmonton taxpayers:
Edmonton;s Police Chief made a statement that this ultimately leads to re-offending which plays a major role in Edmonton’s crime rate.
