Albertan’s are feeling the first real effects of this years winter with heavy snow in both Edmonton and Calgary overnight, leaving covered roads and slick conditions. The snowfall is part of a weather system which will likely continue until Saturday.
In a news release sent out from the City of Calgary, they said drivers will need to prepare themselves for longer commutes than normal and use caution while travelling today.
“Motorists are reminded to monitor changing weather conditions – snow covered roads, ice and visibility can be a factor in your commute. Prepare yourself before you head out, leave plenty of time to get to where you need to go and adapt to the changing weather. Stay safe out there!” said Chris McGeachy mobility spokesperson for the City of Calgary.
Calgary sanders and plows have been steadily working since the snow started falling and will continue to work over the next couple days.
As for the City of Edmonton, the city sent out a tweet early Thursday morning saying “Drive safely and adjust to road conditions while our crews clear the streets.”
They included a link including near real-time snow-clearing map to see where the plows are in action.
Neither the Edmonton or Calgary police have released information on how many crashes they’ve seen this morning.
According to the Alberta Motor Association, wait times for tow service are averaging 12 hours while the wait for a battery boost is about four hours.
