The City of Grande Prairie and Grande Prairie Sunrise House have announced the renaming of 107 Avenue to Tenille Townes Way.
The street is renamed to recognize the Grande Prairie local and Canadian Country Music Award (CCMA) winner and pay tribute to the positive impact she’s made through her music and philanthropic efforts.
The renaming ceremony took place as part of her tour stop at Bonnetts Energy Centre for the “Tenille Townes: Thing that Brought Me Here tour”.
“At a young age, Tenille has already built a strong, record-breaking reputation for herself as an artist while remaining a dedicated philanthropist and staying connected to her roots in Grande Prairie,” said Mayor Jackie Clayton. “We’re pleased to reveal Tenille Townes Way as a way to permanently commemorate our pride in Tenille Townes, who has proudly represented Grande Prairie on the international stage in the country music industry and beyond.”
Townes was born and raised in Grande Prairie, where she discovered her love of country music through her parents and grandparents.
She is the reigning CCMA Female Artist of the Year, a title she has held for a record number of five consecutive years. She’s also won six other CCMA and multiple Juno awards throughout her career.
In 2021, Townes was also named as an Artist Ambassador for the Country Music Association Foundation where she toured schools across Tennessee to engage and empower students through the power of music.
Locally, Townes started the annual Big Hearts for Big Kids Sunrise House fundraiser in Grande Prairie when she was only 15 years old. The event has evolved into one of the largest and most successful in the region, having raised over $2 million to support programming and operating costs for the Sunrise House youth shelter.
