During Métis Week, the City of Edmonton alongside the Otipemisiwak Métis Government for the Métis Week Proclamation.
In addition to the signing, this year’s event featured a milestone agreement; the re-establishment of a formal government-to-government relationship between the City of Edmonton and Otipemisiwak Métis Government through the signing of a new and revised Memorandum of Shared Recognition and Cooperation, the first official agreement between the two partners.
The Mayor of Edmonton, Amarjeet Sohi spoke to media following the event, he mentioned the ever-growing Indigenous and Métis members within their council provides a better understanding of their cultures and provides more growth.
With fiddlers and jiggers present, Métis culture was felt within the walls of City Hall. President of the Metis Nation of Alberta Andrea Sandmaier took some time to discuss what being Métis means to her.
The Métis Nation of Alberta has been celebrating Métis Week in Edmonton since 1997.
