Recent data from Statistics Canada shows the unemployment rate in Alberta reached 8.1 per cent in August 2024, a 1.9 per cent increase in Employment Insurance (EI) claims compared to the previous year.
Edmonton’s unemployment rate rose by 0.6 per cent in August over the previous month, up to 8.6 per cent.
Windsor, Ontario is the only major metro area with a higher unemployment rate in Canada, at 9.0 per cent in August.
Calgary’s unemployment rate fell by 0.1 per cent in August but was still tied for fifth-highest nationally, at 7.5 per cent.
Lethbridge had the 28th-highest unemployment rate at 4.9 per cent.
The hardest-hit demographic in the province is working-age men, with an unemployment rate reaching 9.4 per cent. Nationally, the jobless rate sits at 5.6%, marking the highest level in over two years.
Sectors such as construction, manufacturing, and oil and gas extraction have been particularly affected.
Meanwhile, Saskatchewan posted decreases in unemployment, highlighting the regional disparity in economic conditions.
