A downtown non-profit which assists Edmonton’s vulnerable population is closing it’s doors and will likely be demolished according to the organization.
The Mustard Seed, the Christian Organization which has operated in the Downtown Edmonton Core since the 1980’s announced the closure earlier this week.
According to company representative the building has become too difficult and costly to operate and also fails to prove wheelchair accessibility for clients with disabilities.
The current location has provided meals and is dedicated to combating hunger and homelessness as a part of their vision.
The church has provided holiday meals, funeral facilities, hosted community events and has also been used as a pick up location for food hampers.
Online reviews of the building read , “A church/agency helping people in the inner city with practical needs such as food, clothing, and a safe place to spend time.”
Some Edmontonians are hoping the building can be saved and labeled as a historical site.
The church is on the city’s inventory of historic resources, but isn’t protected according to David Johnston, principal heritage planner with the City of Edmonton’s heritage conservation unit.
The organization can now demolish the building unless Edmonton City Council were to step in which has never been done before.
The food depot program will continue to operate and reopen on Oct. 29 at the Mustard Seed Health and Wellness Centre, located at at 11355 105th Ave.
