Edmonton is now joining the country’s largest municipalities when it comes the unemployment rates. Statistics Canada’s numbers for last month show the unemployment rate in Alberta’s capital sits at 9%. That’s up from 8.6 per cent in August and above the national average of 6.5 per cent.
Down in southern Alberta, Calgary and Lethbridge are included in Statistics Canada’s report. Calgary’s jobless rate is 7.4 per cent and Lethbridge’s is 5.1 per cent.
Looking north, last month’s unemployment in the Wood Buffalo Cold Lake census region was 7.2 per cent, up slightly from seven per cent in August. The last time unemployment was at seven per cent was January 2022.
Windsor, Ontario is the only other city with an unemployment rate more than 8 per cent at 8.9.
